Non-Fiction Book Series About Animals my Kids LOVE: Ages 4-8

It’s no secret around here how much my family adores books. We’ve already been over our favorite picture books (ages 0-5), some great early early reader series, and some read-aloud chapter books we’ve enjoyed. However, my kids have been in a major animal phase lately (for the past four years, give or take). So today I’m highlighting our FAVORITE non-fiction book series about animals that my kids keep coming back to.

Food Webs Series- by William Anthony

These food webs books have been in circulation in our home (off and on) for a few years now. My boys can’t get enough of them. The photography is great, and it teaches about predators/prey/herbivores/carnivores in a very clear, visual, way.

You can find Food Webs books by William Anthony about a lot of different ecosystems: the ocean, grasslands, forests, rivers, deserts, and mountains.

The reading level is listed as 8-9 years old, but the pictures & graphics make it very easy for all ages to look through & learn from– independently, or with someone.

Dr. Sugar Glider Books – written by Jess Keating, illustrated by Pete Oswald

These are my FAVORITE animal books to read with my kiddos. There are two different books in this series featuring “Dr. Glider” – a sugar glider that solves problems for all types of animals. They are the best of both worlds in my opinion because it reads like a beautifully illustrated picture book… but is backed up with the facts & knowledge of a non-fiction book.

I can’t recommend these enough! I learned so much about tons of different animals and found the subtle humor so charming. And look at the illustration style! Ah!

Who Would Win? Books – by Jerry Pallotta, illustrated by Rob Bolster

These books are what my five-year-old-son’s dreams are made of. It pits animals against each other in fictional battles to see who may come out on top. You learn a lot of facts about each of the animals leading up to the “battle”, and there are TONS of books in this series to check out.

They are truly just like kryptonite for my sons.

Bonus: The Animal Book Encyclopedia

This isn’t a series, BUT it’s an incredible non-fiction animal book for children. My kids read this ALL of the time. They like to go through and each pick their favorite animal from each page, or reference it when they have a specific question about a specific type of animal.

That Wraps Up our Favorite Non-Fiction Book Series About Animals!

What would you add to this list?
